Plane Makes an Emergency Landing in the Middle of Highway 65

Plane lands safely on grassy center divide on busy highway between Rocklin and Roseville's Sunset and Blue Oaks boulevards.

Drivers were no doubt in shock when they saw a small plane pull up alongside them on the center divide of Highway 65 this morning.

Pilot John Mares made an emergency landing on the grassy median separating the busy highway at about 10:30 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol Officer Nico Bonfilio.

"A gentlemen was flying the airplane when he experienced a complete mechanical failure," said Bonfilio, of the Newcastle CHP office. "The primary reason for the failure was a fuel pump."

No one was injured in the emergency landing, including the pilot, said Bonfilio.

“Props to him for not hitting any cars when he was landing," Bonfilio said. "He was able to land it safely considering the circumstances. Incredible."

At 3 p.m., CHP officials were still looking into just how to get the plane off the highway, considering towing it in pieces if it could not be repaired and flown off. Soon after, however, the plane successfully took off at about 4 p.m. landing at nearby Lincoln Airport.
