“We were very impressed with how they were able to pull this together for the first year,” Holst said. “I think our involvement will be able to continue to grow.”

This year, about 100 high school students involved in the church’s high school ministry will donate their time to help out, along with a group of fifth- and sixth-graders, Holst said. In addition, they’ve collected and will be donating kids clothing for the event.

More than 40,000 pounds of free goods will be given to thousands of area residents Saturday for Convoy of Hope, rain or shine. Groceries will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last. Also available at the event will be free health screenings, haircuts, a job fair and entertainment.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Sacramento residents to unite and do something positive to combat the growing problems plaguing our community,” said Robin Smith, Convoy coordinator in a news release. “All guests at the outreach will be greeted with open arms and will be given nourishment for both their body and soul. These people are our ‘honored guests’ and we will do everything we can to make a difference in their lives.”
