Update: The Gathering Inn Homeless Shelter to Close

shelter will close Monday because of lack of funding, according to a spokesperson from the Roseville nonprofit. But they hope the closure is only temporary.

The Gathering Inn is a nonprofit organization that provides shelter and programs for the homeless community. The shelter gives guests a place to shower, relax and also provides clean clothes.

“It’s not forever,” Shirley Saunders with The Gathering Inn said. “Just hopefully until we get some more money.”

In the meantime, Saunders said they have received a donation of sleeping bags that they will be handing out to people in need.

The Gathering Inn was recently the recipient of , which will keep the organization’s interim care program and the medical clinic open, Saunders said.

Saunders said monetary donations are welcome and they hope to re-open the shelter once more funding comes in.

“This is our home … this is our family,” Saunders said.

In a message to supporters, The Gathering Inn Executive Director Suzi deFosset said the nonprofit began 2012 with a $80,000 deficit because of a decrease in grants and they do not have the funds to pay staff. They plan to close for six to eight weeks, deFosset wrote.

Here's an excerpt from deFosset's message:

We do have volunteers for twice weekly showers so the homeless can come and get cleaned up for employment and interviewing. During our hiatus we will be diligently working on funding so that we will be able to open our doors in mid September and remain open!

Since we will be working with a minimal staff, we will not be taking in donations of clothing or other personal hygiene items.
