Electric Bill Help Scam Alert
No one in Roseville has fallen for this “get help with your electric bill” scam, but Roseville Police want residents to be aware that it’s circulating via robo-calls and social media.
Here’s how it works: Usually the victims of this scam receive an automated phone call informing them of a nonexistent Obama administration program to help pay utility bills in the midst of a hot summer. People interested in the program will then be prompted to divulge personal information like Social Security, credit card and checking account numbers — information that could be used for credit card fraud or identity theft.
There have been reports of the hoax spreading by text message, flyers left at homes and even personal visits, but Roseville Police have not heard reports locally yet.
The easiest way to protect yourself from fraud is to never give out personal information to someone who calls you, according to Roseville Police.
