Police Arrest 2 for Possession of Stolen Property

At 3:02 p.m. Sept. 22, an officer was conducting extra patrol for vehicle burglars, and checked on a suspicious car with two people napping inside, in the parking lot of a fitness center in the 300 block of North Sunrise Avenue.   One of the people was on probation.  The officer conducted a probation search of the car and found prescription narcotics, drug paraphernalia, burglar's tools and several stolen California driver's licenses and other ID cards.

The officer was able to contact three of the owners of the stolen ID cards, and found that they had been stolen from purses that had been left inside unattended cars (1) at a store parking lot in Roseville; (2) in a parking lot next to the American River Bike Trail, while the owner went for a run; and (3) in front of a home in Elk Grove.  The victims' bank cards had been used to make unauthorized purchases.

Resident Falls for Online Payday Loan Scam

Roseville Police warn residents of an online payday loan scam after a resident fell victim to the scam earlier this month.

According to police, a resident applied online for a payday loan, providing her bank account numbers, social security number and other personal information.  She got a phone call a few days later from a male who told her she was approved for a loan, but first had to send some money as collateral.  The resident purchased a prepaid money card, and called the male back to give him the access code (transferring the money to him).  He told her she'd have the money for the loan she requested in her bank account that night.

When the money didn't show up in the account, the victim called the scam-artist back, and he told her she'd need to provide additional money.  She purchased another prepaid gift card, and again gave him the access number.

When the loan still didn't show up in her account, she called the scam-artist back, and he tried to talk her into sending still more money, but she refused. Later she learned that someone had tried to purchase an airline ticket using her name and bank account information, but was declined.

The victim then reported the scam to police.  The investigating officer called the scam-artist's phone number, and talked to a couple of males with East Indian accents, who hung up on him.  The officer researched the phone number provided, and found it was probably a "spoofed" phone number created on the Internet to display phony caller ID information.

A tip from Roseville Police:  Be very cautious about answering ads online or providing personal and financial information to anyone except a known, reputable company.  Notify your bank and credit card companies immediately if you think your information has been compromised.  Anytime someone offers you something--a loan, a job, a share of earnings,  lottery winnings--but wants you to send money first, that's a huge red flag--stop dealing with them immediately.  Anytime someone wants you to wire money to them or provide them with prepaid credit card information, stop--you're being scammed.  Once you wire money or provide pre-paid debit card information, your money is gone and can't be recovered.
