Homeowner Burned, Hospitalized Trying to Put Out Garage Fire in North Highlands

Fire crews say the fire involved a vehicle-- and spread to some propane tanks which exploded.

The following is a press release from the Sacramento Metro Fire District:

Just after midnight [Tuesday], Metro Fire crews responded to a house on Danfield Circle in North Highlands and found a well-involved garage fire, with propane tanks exploding. The fire, which had started in a car parked between houses, quickly spread to the garage and into the attic of one of the homes. By attacking the fire from the inside, crews were able to keep the fire from advancing into the residence, saving both the home and belongings. Six occupants were reported to have evacuated themselves before crews arrived, but a rapid search was still completed to confirm that nobody was in danger.

Twenty-six firefighters engaged in fire attack, searching, ventilating, salvage and overhaul. Crews were able to contain the fire to the garage and attic, with no extension into the living area. Firefighting efforts saved roughly $200,000 in personal property. Combined value of the garage and vehicle damage is estimated at $50,000.

Metro Fire reminds residents to be very careful attempting to put out a fire on your own. Firefighters wear protective equipment, and can still get burned. If in doubt, get out; belongings can be replaced, you can’t!
