Roseville Big Rig Driver Fatally Injured in Fiery Crash

William Ballard was pronounced dead at a local Kaiser hospital, where he was taken following the 6:40 a.m. crash on the westbound State Route 37, at the northbound SR 29 entrance ramp.

A man who was killed in a fiery big-rig crash along state Highway 37 in Vallejo Thursday morning was identified by the Solano County Coroner's office as a 43-year-old Roseville resident.

William Ballard was pronounced dead at a local Kaiser hospital, where he was taken following the 6:40 a.m. crash on the westbound State Route 37, at the northbound SR 29 entrance ramp.

Note: This SF Chronicle article says Ballard was from Citrus Heights

His name was provided to Patch by Solano County Deputy Coroner Tenzin Dorji.

Police immediately shut down the 29 on ramp to the 37 and a SigAlert was subsequently issued for a closure from the westbound Interstate 80 to the 37.

The California Highway Patrol confirmed to Patch that the Ace Hardware truck driver was taken to a local Kaiser hospital, where he died of his injuries.

According to CHP Officer Christopher Parker, the big rig and the pickup both were traveling west on 37 when for some reason they struck each other and both went into the entrance ramp railing.

The big rig went over the railing and down about four feet to the 29, Parker told Patch.

"Witnesses recall hearing an explosion," Parker told Patch, "but we think the impact caused a small fire."

The Ace driver was making deliveries to various stores so, "we don't know what type of chemicals were there," Parker said.

Traffic was snarled for hours and as of 2:25 p.m., one lane -- a far right turn lane on 29 -- was still closed, as hazardous materials teams and emergency crews cleaned up the mess.

Emergency crews requested "a couple of hundred feet of cable," according to the CHP incident log.

The pickup driver refused medical treatment and left the scene, Parker said.

Today we lost a wonderful man. William Billy Ballard to an accident that shouldn't happen, had the pickup driver used his judgment not to compete with a big rig. Or even a small car To gain few minutes. Better to be late few minutes than loosing life in a minute.

I am Billy Ballard's sister, and I haven't seen any police report explaining exactly what happened. However I do know that I lost my only big brother that I loved and respected deeply. What we lost was a loving brother, father, spouse and a very special son on Thursday. Which has left a lot confusion, sadness, crying and changed all of our lives forever. Billy was just such loving father that would do anything for his kids and wife. Billy you will be so missed and you are loved 10 times over. I miss you
