A national organization is accusing the City of Roseville of improperly endorsing a religion-affiliated celebrity chili cook-off.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter to Mayor Susan Rohan on Feb. 26, according to the Sacramento Bee, saying, “even though the City of Roseville is not a sponsor of this event, it is inappropriate for a government employee to use his or her official email to promote events benefiting a religious ministry.”
The city says an individual employee sent the email, inappropriately, stressing that the City itself is not a sponsor.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation shared the story on their Facebook page Tuesday morning:
“FRFF in the news over inappropriate city employee email promoting a religious fundraiser,” began the Facebook post. “And we need to note that one of our newest FFRF chapters brought this matter to the public's attention! Thanks Sacramento Chapter!”
One commenter on the post says, “This seems a bit excessive, no? I mean seriously…”
But another responds with, “Using government resources to promote religion is what it is. You say excessive and I say blatent...Thanks FFRF for sticking up for the constitution...no matter how small a violation!!!”
