District Considers Closing Dry Creek Elementary School

Creekview Ranch Middle School in Roseville would become a kindergarten- through eighth-grade school.

Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District officials are considering closing Dry Creek Elementary School in Roseville and expanding Creekview Ranch Middle School.

Board of Trustees and staff will discuss the possible closure during the board meeting tonight, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. where the public is invited to attend and comment.

According to district documents, Dry Creek Elementary students would relocate to Creekview Ranch starting in the 2014-15 school year. Creekview Ranch would expand to serve kindergarten through eighth-grade students.

The closure possibility stems from a list of challenges the district currently faces regarding Dry Creek Elementary School, including the need for intersection and off-site improvements, inadequate infrastructure facilities such as septic, restrooms and kitchen areas, limited access to the school for student drop-off and buses, the lack of a multi-purpose room and the inability to conduct new construction without moving the district office.

Wow, this comes as a bit of a shock. I can certainly understand the issues involved. Dry Creek has such a stellar reputation and the students seem to be happy with the school, so indeed it would be unfortunate if the facility was closed down. I would suspect the teaching staff would not want to see the change, either. The general location, while convenient for so many students, definitely has its limitations, and I've experienced the traffic issues on many afternoons where PFE gets backed up due to the congestion at the corner of PFE and Cook Riolo. Creekview, for safety and traffic issues, has a big advantage over Dry Creek. I would not have thought they could handle the extra students without a lot of new construction. I'm sure the board will come to make the right decision about closing the facility, but it will certainly be a blow to the many students and families that have enjoyed the privilege of having such a highly rated school so convenient to their homes.
