Granite Bay Rugby to Play for State Title Saturday

A club rugby team from Granite Bay will head to the Bay Area this weekend to challenge a southern California team for the state title.

The Granite Bay Grizzlies will face off against the Santa Monica Dolphins for the California State High School Rugby Cup Title Saturday at the San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby field on Treasure Island.

Both the varsity and junior varsity teams are competing for the respective titles.

Earlier this month Granite Bay's varsity team beat Burbank High School's rugby team to earn the northern California title, while the JV team beat Danville for its northern California title.

Granite Bay's rugby team includes players from Oakmont, Granite Bay, Del Campo and other schools, The Roseville Press Tribune and Sacramento Bee reported.

WHAT: California State High School Rugby Cup Championships: Granite Bay Rugby (www.granitebayrugby.com) vs. Santa Monica Rugby.

Cup title match features Northern California High School Varsity Champion Granite Bay vs. Santa Monica. Granite Bay’s Junior Varsity (JV) also won the Northern California Division title and will compete for the State Cup JV title on the same day.

WHO: Granite Bay Grizzlies – among 18 boys and girls high school/youth rugby championship teams (players and coaches). (Granite Bay is 30 miles east of Sacramento).

: San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby field/Clubhouse – Building 34 – Treasure Island (San Francisco)

WHEN: 
May 25. Varsity Cup Title match: 2:30 p.m. Junior Varsity Cup match: 11:30 a.m. (Granite Bay in both).
