California State Fair Opens Today at Cal Expo: Will You Attend?

Are you going? Know of any Roseville exhibitors or performers?

Just in time for the dog days of summer, the California State Fair opens today at Cal Expo.

That means its time for deep-fried fair food, carnival rides, livestock and more. Gates open at 11 a.m. today.

Fair times are:

  • Monday - Thursday: 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Friday - Sunday: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.

You can do what I do to beat the heat and check out the exhibit halls during the day. My favorite is the counties exhibits and there's a "Toytopia" exhibit with toys that sounds fun.

There are also free concerts. It's not that big of a lineup, I think, compared to previous years that included acts that at least were interesting including M.C. Hammer, Jessica Simpson and Ozomatli. This year's acts include Rick Springfield on July 19, "American Idol" contestant Scotty McCreery on July 21, Hot Chelle Rae on July 24 and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on July 27.

Standard ticket prices are:

  • General Admission: $12
  • Senior Admission (Ages 62+): $10
  • Youth Admission (Ages 5-12): $8
  • Child Admission (Ages 0-4): Free

The fair runs through July 29.

Are you going to the fair this year? Why or why not? Do you know of any Roseville residents who are exhibiting artwork or displays or even performing at the fair? Let us know with a comment below.

County fairs are putting on a poor showing these days. Most of the county fairs I have been to this year (Placer, El Dorado) reflect two sharp contrasts: 1. A large part of the attendees are out of work with little money to spend;, and, 2. they do not reflect the dramatic change from rural to suburban environments. I saw the same thing happen in San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties 15 years ago. San Mateo and San Francisco counties saved their attendance by turning into outdoor sports and boat shows. But who can afford even that these days? No, I will not be attending the Sacramento fair.

I go to the State Fair at least once every year. Last year I went twice because there were two concerts I wanted to see. Enjoy walking the grounds, fried food and the general fair atmosphere.
