Just a short walk or drive from the busy streets of Roseville, visitors can enjoy quiet trails and experience the tranquility of nature. This rock holds a special significance. Do you know where it is located and why it is important?
Answer:
This rock is located on the grounds of the Maidu Museum and Historic Site (1970 Johnson Ranch Drive - Map) and contains petroglyphs left behind by the Nisenan Maidu who called this location home for thousands of years. The Maidu Museum provides a glimpse into the cultural and material life of the Maidu people, both ancient and modern.
The Museum displays a sample of tools made by the Native Californians who once lived here and a variety of the baskets, toys and games they used. Cultural features which can be seen on the Trail include petroglyphs and grinding holes. Together, the Museum and the Trail give the visitor a sense of what life may have been like for the early inhabitants of this area.
