these rankings are questionable being that is the school scores righteous being that schools in…Read More more affluent areas are supplemented by parents adding extra schooling via tutoring whereas schools where its not so affluent and less likely to add additional tutoring.....it skews what the school alone achieved.

People don't read propositions, and vote because of manipulated television ads. This proposition…Read More will only work this year to help our students and teachers. Next year they will not see the "windfall" and politicians and unions will once again be shaming the community into voting for more money that will not go to the students and teachers. This proposition will simply help line the pockets of union officials and administrators. Schools will continue to be over crowded. Schools will continue to close. Children will continue to again fall far below the national average.

Let's be thankful that the Governor and the Democrats pushed Proposition 30 through in 2012. If it…Read More were up to our local political "worthies" it would have never happened.

We as taxpayers are dumping more and more money into our schools, yet the money isn't going to the…Read More classrooms or the teachers. Instead, we have administrators on top of administrators who are making huge salaries for basically overseeing the same jobs. Our schools in California fall well below all national standards, and our kids aren't prepared for adulthood. It is a shame. I will not vote for any new taxes for our schools until I can see the funds helping teachers and students.

Why did they lose their lease? Who owns the property? What are the property owner's plans?…Read More
"...the landlord's new terms were excessive and greedy...." Says who? Has anyone verified this? Has anyone received the property owner's point of view..not saying you are wrong, I'm just asking the question...

Thank you for the update!
I am eagerly awaiting the new Roseville Merryhill. I'm a parent who had…Read More their child in the campus on Baseline that had to close last month. I know that every effort was made on behalf of the Merryhill staff to renew the lease -- the landlord's new terms were excessive and greedy.
I don't believe that this school is poorly managed -- just the opposite. It was a painful decision for the staff, and I know that many of the other parents (and children) dearly miss their beloved teachers. I firmly believe that they made the right decision.
To say that I'm a very picky mom is quite an understatement. My husband and I thoroughly researched where we wanted to send our child to preschool, and found the best choice to be Merryhill.
I hope that the Planning Commission moves forward on the permit. Many families have their children temporarily displaced, and we're looking forward to having our school in back in Roseville.

Much of the charter school problem is that they are often "profit-oriented" and are poorly…Read More managed at that task as well. Has Placer County ascertained that they have put in standardized business management practices, student evaluation, and third-party oversight with penalties for non-compliance? Bet you they haven't.

It will rise in the northeast but will depend on when you're looking. Before dawn on the 22nd should…Read More be the best time due to a bright moon and number of expected citings. So it won't probably be in the southwest sky then.

We are so sad to be leaving 3 months early! It was such a shock! We will always be grateful for the…Read More amazing care and early education our two daughters have received over the past 8 1/2 years. We are equally grateful that Amber has ensured that our pre-k daughter will have as smooth a transition to Rocklin as possible and worked incredibly hard to smooth the logistics of the transfer over the past 4 weeks. We would certainly follow Amber and the staff to the new school if we had children continuing in preschool. Whatever the property owners have planned for the school, it will never be the place Merryhill was for so many children and families for a whole generation.

Where are all of those families going to put their children? Very sad for those children unable to…Read More be finishing out the school year together.

You are welcome, Dale. I believe that the Morgan Creek will be a school someday, but that is at…Read More least 7-10 years down the road. We will have to wait for not only the economy to improve, but for building to start up again. It was not a decision that anyone on the board was happy about- but the district is using this as an opportunity to do something unique and special- (and save money at the same time) rather than complaining, or kicking the can down the road until we are in a fix like Sacramento City district is- where they just voted to close down 7 schools on Thursday night.
Dale Herrington February 23, 2013 at 11:12 pm
Thanks Jeff, for a prompt and complete reply. It will be interesting to see how the current Dry…Read More Creek School property will be used in the future. Perhaps a new district office near the front of the property with some of the costs offset by selling land between the property and the one home on that section of Cook Riolo for a couple of custom homes. In addition, the 3.5 acres across the street from DCS is available since the very elderly gentleman who occupied the old shack died late in 2012. The school closing probably enhances the value of that land. Note: My wife and I have six grandchildren living in the
area. One at Woodcreek, two at Creekview and a fourth grader at Dry Creek. He'll be unaffected as his normal transition date to Creekview would be Fall of 2014 regardless of the new plans.
Jeff Randall February 23, 2013 at 07:14 pm
The choice came down to:
1) moving kids to several elementary schools at a cost of 450K of one…Read More time expense + ongoing expense of 79K per year. There would be a need as well to redraw all of the elementary school lines.
2) Create the K-8. One time cost of about around $425K with a savings of $225K each year.
The timetable is 18 months. This will give the district time to come up with the bell schedule, make sure they have the staff in place, and get all on board before the K-5 kids come over in August of 2014. The full bridge is scheduled to be in place by then, along with a sidewalk.
Starting in August 2013, kids who are currently living in selected parts of the district will begin attending the middle school closer to home, while current Creekview kids can continue there if they choose. Parents will be able to apply for transfers to the school of their choice for the next several weeks if they have a preference one way or another.
The tax implications are simple. There are not any. The cost of changing things over (putting in playgrounds, modifying a few classrooms, etc) will be recouped with savings from within 2 years.

Antelope Crossing and Silverado will get bigger, but still around 20% below the number of students…Read More at the peek of 2007.
The middle school teachers at Creekview (around 2/3 of them) will be relocated to the other 2 middle schools over the next 18 months as a part of the transition. This plan will not lead to teachers losing their jobs- but some might be at a different school starting in August of 2013.
Robert February 21, 2013 at 10:14 pm
The article states that Silverado and Antelope Crossing will get added students. Doesn't Creekview…Read More Ranch already get the overflow from these two schools. So why is Creekview Ranch already getting overflow students now. When these other two schools could have taken the extra students these past years. You are just increasing the size of these two schools when in past years they could not take the added increase. Also what happens to the teachers at Creekview Ranch? Do they get replaced by teachers from Dry Creek?

Wow, this comes as a bit of a shock. I can certainly understand the issues involved. Dry Creek has…Read More such a stellar reputation and the students seem to be happy with the school, so indeed it would be unfortunate if the facility was closed down. I would suspect the teaching staff would not want to see the change, either.
The general location, while convenient for so many students, definitely has its limitations, and I've experienced the traffic issues on many afternoons where PFE gets backed up due to the congestion at the corner of PFE and Cook Riolo.
Creekview, for safety and traffic issues, has a big advantage over Dry Creek. I would not have thought they could handle the extra students without a lot of new construction.
I'm sure the board will come to make the right decision about closing the facility, but it will certainly be a blow to the many students and families that have enjoyed the privilege of having such a highly rated school so convenient to their homes.

Its an interesting idea. Now, though, who is going to pay for all the computers needed for these…Read More tests? To make the test fair, each student will have to take them at the same time. Where will the schools put them? Who will pay for IT staff to make sure they are operating properly? Who will pay the insurance for the computers, and for the extra electricity needed at each school site? Where are the facts behind the ability to implement this new plan? This plan needs more details explained.
navigio January 10, 2013 at 03:18 pm
Not only that, but CST participation rate is a metric for AYP, so a school that falls below the 95%…Read More threshold will not make AYP (not that that matters anymore, nor that it ever mattered for non-title1 schools like SM).
I would expect ongoing district assessments are used more than CSTs for placement for intervention given that there are more of them and they are more closely aligned with what is going on the classroom. If its true that schools are using CST results for individual intervention decisions, then I think parents should know that (and realize its probably a bad idea). Your school site council should have info on that since its job is to monitor things like that.
In any case, anyone who wants to opt out should also ask their child. They should have a say in the matter.
Louis Educe January 10, 2013 at 12:07 pm
Gail Ann, while you are correct on the parent opt out right please make sure and tell parents to ask…Read More the school/district what the STAR scores are used for with in the disrtict/school/grage-level. if the child is in the middle grades (7th and 8th are most important) these scores are used to make placement choices for high school courses. Many HS counselors will NOT look very closely at grades (A,Bs) because of the fear of grade inflation - unless you can make sure you child also have some non-biased, standardized (normed) test data their placement choices might be limited. If your child is a high performer you can have them start taking the PSAT in 8th grade (but they will be compared to 10th grade standards). At the lower grade levels the CST data is used to also make placement choices into intervention as well as higher level instructional clusters. Be well aware of the implications of withdrawing your child from the testing before you just exercise you right to "make a point"

I am responding to Shlripathi Kamath's post of January 15 which takes exception to a teacher who…Read More receives a 78% pension for 12 years of teaching based on a salary in her/his last year in the classroom of $78,912. The writer cites no source for the information, and as a retired teacher I am concerned that readers will take this claim as fact.
Please consider the following: teacher retirement in the State of California is administered by the state, not by school districts. It is based on teacher age at retirement, number of years taught, and birthdate.
Here is an estimate of what a California teacher might receive based on the profile the writer uses. It is based on the formula as I came to understand it in going through my own retirement process.
Using the writer's data, here is what a California teacher might receive If she/he
retires this June with 12 years of experience, a birthdate of 1946 and an age at retirement of 64 years and seven moths, her/his retirement stipend would be approximately $1,869.89 per month or $22,438.68 per annum. That equates to 28% of final compensation, not the 78% that the writer decries.

Good teachers of course matter and I think most of them are quite good. I have kids at SRVHS and…Read More CWMS and for the most part am pleased with how professional they are. Sometimes though we do run into a bad one. When that happens my kids are strong enough to work through it and be fine but the weakers ones suffer.
In our school system it is MUCH easier for the teachers because you have VERY involved parents. We are a team and work with eachother. I hate the teachers union but respect the teachers. I also think there are many things we could do to improve things for students and teachers but we lack the backbone to do it.

Chris, I taught for thirty years. I never met one P.E.teacher who thought P.E. was more important…Read More than academics. It has it's place in a curriculum, but most important?
