Teens Allegedly Scour Neighborhood for Unlocked Cars, Then Steal From Them

Roseville Police say this type of crime is common.

A Roseville resident and his dad stopped a burglary in process two weeks ago, police say.

The resident looked out of his window on Lyndhurst Avenue–in the Cresthaven area–around 3:30 a.m. on June 27 and saw the interior light on in his vehicle, and a door wide open on a neighbor's car, according to a police crime log.

"He went outside and saw two people running away," the crime log states. "He and his dad detained one of the fleeing suspects, and called police."

Officers were able to detain both suspects, identified as 16-year-old boys from Citrus Heights. The boys "had been going around the neighborhood looking for unlocked cars to steal from," police say.

Police were able to recover items stolen that night, and return them to residents on Lyndhurst Avenue and Vernon Oaks Drive.

The teens were booked on charges of theft and released to their parents, according to the crime log.

Roseville Police warn this is a common type of crime:

"We often encounter thieves who work just by trying car door handles and stealing from ones they find unlocked. Don't let your car be one of them. Always remove all your valuables, roll up your windows all the way, and lock all doors."
