Some Roseville Schools Will Let Out Early Next Year: Here's Why

The Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District will release students early each Monday to provide teachers with staff development time.

Some students in Roseville will be leaving school early one day a week next year, but they won't have less time in the classroom.

The Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District will let all students out an hour early each Monday starting this fall, in an effort to give teachers time to plan and talk about what's working in their classes.

"One of the things that we find to be a huge need for our classroom teachers is they really don't have much time to plan together as a group or at sub-groups at their sites," Superintendent Mark Geyer said by phone.

The new schedule won't save the district any money, because teachers will still be at work after the students leave early, and the other four days of the week will be lengthened so kids still have the same amount of classroom time.

"School gets out about an hour early on Monday and the time you take out of Monday is spread out over the other days," Geyer said.

He said the exact schedules will vary, and encouraged parents to check with their specific school for next year's schedule.

It's a new strategy for the district, but a similar approach has been tried in the Roseville Joint Union High School District, Geyer said.

He also said he's worked for districts that tried a similar schedule, and saw it to be "a very effective tool to the benefit of the students." Teachers are able to discuss the best ways to teach certain kinds of material, and are also given "a little more sanity," he said.

"The result of that is that we're going to have better student performance," Geyer said. "I think our kids will do better."
