Granite Bay Wins State Rugby Championship

The Granite Bay Grizzlies varisty and JV rugby teams are now state champions.

The two teams beat the Santa Monica Dolphins last weekend in San Francisco: the final score for varsity was 20-12, and the final score for the JV game was 41-17.

Earlier this month Granite Bay's varsity team beat Burbank High School's rugby team to earn the northern California title, while the JV team beat Danville for its northern California title.

Granite Bay's rugby team includes players from Oakmont, Granite Bay, Del Campo and other schools, The Roseville Press Tribune and Sacramento Bee reported.

Rugby is a club sport, and the championships are sponsored by the Northern California Youth Rugby Association and sanctioned by USA Rugby, the team said in a press release.
