I am a parent of 4 children ranging in age from 2 to 13. I have 3 living children and one angel babyRead More that passed at 3 months. Having lost a child I know the pain that comes with that loss. Susan...I have sympathy for these children but not for the parents. I have never forgotten my children whether I have 3 of them with me or just one of them with me. The reason so many parents are upset about this is because you don't forget something that is the most important thing in your life. I can't tell you how many times my kids have fallen asleep in the car....not once have I ever forgotten that they were there. I agree that several people have children that do not deserve them. It makes me angry that people like you can sympathize with parents who make what you call is a mistake... A mistake is putting red laundry in with white laundry. Leaving your child in a car is not a mistake...it is simply put negligence and child abuse. Making excuses for why people make these so called mistakes is sickening. Do you "forget" to change your baby because they are asleep? Do you "forget" to feed your child because they are in their room playing when you are fixing supper? And your argument about kids "mistakingly" drowning in a bath tub is even more troubling. What responsible adult would ever leave a child in the bathtub by themselves? The answer is not one. These children do not ask to be born. It is the responsibility of the parent to make sure of their children's safety. We live in a time when people are too absorbed by what celebrity is doing this or that or what so and so posted on Facebook or twitter. People are getting lazy because everything is automatic. We have cars with back up cameras so you don't run over a child that isn't being watched....cars that can park themselves because people don't want to learn to parallel park ( because it's too hard(sarcasm))...cars that tell you you forgot your keys dumbass...headlights that go on and off on their own because people can't remember to turn them on in the rain or dark and turn them off when they park. We have become used to having to be reminded of what our responsibilities are by everyone else. People have hectic lives because they make it that way. It still isn't an excuse to forget the only thing in your life that depends completely on you for it's survival.

The thing I find interesting is women are dead set against people that smoke but the major majorityRead More of them drink regularly. Driving under influence of alcohol or drugs stats DO NOT include accidents caused by an impairedRead More driver who did something stupid, caused an accident, but wasn't in the accident. Cutting someone off, weaving in high-speed traffic, crossing center line, stopping short, running stop signs/street lights, etc. can cause an accident without offending party being in the accident. misplaced patriotism and summarily killing masses on the orders of an egomaniac commander who wouldRead More not carry out the ridiculous mission without the questioning of the reasonableness of the mission, can ,and has led to the robotic knee jerk reaction to mindlessly commit global genocide by non thinking trained mercenaries who feel they can KILL their way into problem solving. then come home and turn on family and friends and community due to the vaccines , and brain damage and residue of the depleted uranium weapons they may use to dump an a sovereign country through fake FEAR AND LIES FROM COMMAND. SouthernBelle - I chased them for many many years - every time I would almost get old enough theyRead More moved the bar - I'm taking every one I can get! I earned them! **** Steve - you and SouthernBelle appear to be arguing (discussing) from two very valid viewpoints. I tend to agree that there need to be age limits on jobs like these simply because of my own situation. I am over that age and was and still am physically fit enough to qualify. But I also out of nowhere had a stroke, which I recovered from. They have not yet been able to find any physical cause for it other than age. It isn't about the person in the job - the age limit is based on the medical risk profile that would endanger both the employee and the public he is tasked with serving. The likelihood of sudden debilitating circumstances increases with age and these jobs have a stress level which can precipitate it. Are you saying that the Armed Forces also should allow people into combat who are physically fit and over age? It's a matter of medical probabilities, not individual circumstances and somewhere there has to be a guiding line - that is not age discrimination. **** As far as what SouthernBelle says about her personal belief that men and women are designed for different things, I think you replied with a tired old response that is completely outdated. The point wasn't about what is "allowed" or "social equality", it was about physical differences that make one sex or the other more suited for a specific job. That denigrates neither - it just sorts society into equally valuable jobs which are performed more efficiently by one or the other. **** And I bet SouthernBelle knows something many women and men have forgotten - it's a whole lot more fun acting out the roles when men act like men and women act like women and we all play the game and enjoy life as equal but thankfully different! **** Any good man who values his life knows women are superior to men and don't argue with them because even if you win, you lose!! :-) **** Jeremiah
Steve Mehlman July 11, 2014 at 02:01 pm
You are right about one thing. Even if you win, you lose. :)..... But age discrimination is a soreRead More point with me; I've had it happen to me. And I'd ask Southernbelle to walk a mile in my shoes before condemning me for just "bitching.".....I think that age discrimination robs our society of strong, competent, experienced, knowledgeable people....Also, Jeremiah if someone is physically and mentally fit for combat, why shouldn't they serve?.... There are so many ways to measure an individual's capabilities. So why do we ignore all of them and just base this life-altering decision on an arbitrary age...a calendar no more determines a person's fitness and ability than his wallet determines the amount of money he has.
Jeremiah July 11, 2014 at 05:23 pm
Steve - I actually agree with both viewpoints and I am suffering that age discrimination thing rightRead More now myself. It has been over 4 years of looking and having exactly 6 job interviews and four of those turned out to be scams to have you work for a month cheaply and then they let you go and hire someone else on the cheap so I didn't take them. This is with a history of owning 3 of my own companies and successfully selling them and being the general manager of another for 8 years before leaving to form my own business again. And I am still fit and can work youngsters in the ground and I do on my construction projects I oversee occasionally for a contractor friend. Age is the factor keeping me unemployed, so I well know what you are speaking of! **** That said, after having an unexplained stroke out of nowhere I have to say that the possibility of medical problems grows with age - even if you happen to be the one it hasn't happened to. 60 is about the breaking point when the risk of things happening starts growing and as each year passes risk turns into probability at some point. In a lot of jobs this shouldn't matter - but there are certain jobs where other people depend on you being 100% and these people could be at great risk if something went wrong at the wrong time. So these positions have an arbitrary age limit based on risk and probability. Is it fair to a fit older person to be turned down because they have passed a certain number? No - but neither is it fair to expose citizens to increased risk. I make a distinction between those jobs and the ones people can do which don't place increased risk on people that are denied them by employers because of age. **** Jeremiah
